The Client
Providing coverage for nearly 4 million people, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina has been leading the charge in making high quality, affordable health insurance, available to North Carolinians statewide.
The Situation
Like many organizations, Blue Cross Blue Shield were well aware of an efficiency problem, but had no solution at hand. In partnership with digital agency, Appnovation, BCBS decided it needed to evangelize a solution like Drupal, which would prove to be a big change given the current technology ecosystem. Blue Cross Blue Shield needed to migrate its public facing site (www.bluecrossnc.com) to a more open platform to increase flexibility, scalability, security, and enable their publishing and dev teams to be more nimble and perform more efficiently.
The Challenge
Blue Cross Blue Shield’s previous website was a patchwork of proprietary HTML code had to technically be rebuilt from scratch. While this seemed to be daunting task at the beginning and at several points throughout the delivery stages, Blue Cross Blue Shield was confident that Appnovation enthusiasm and in-house intellect coupled with a technologically superior platform would alleviate both digital and business challenges.
The Solution
From the start, Appnovation worked with the BCBS team to discover common workflow trends among the patchwork HTML code. From there, the team developed a full-featured solution that included a content audit workflow via Workbench, content staging using Deploy, an embedded Angular application for Medicare, in addition to WCAG compliance.
Using the Acquia platform enabled not only a seamless shift, but also increased efficiency while decreasing risk in the process. Since then, ongoing deployments have been easy to manage, and having their Drupal website hosted on the best-of-breed platform allowed both teams to remain nimble and deploy easily and as often as the project required.
The Results
The BCBS internal teams are energized by their ability to make changes on the fly for the first time. The organization as a whole has increased their digital flexibility and nimbleness, and as such are challenging themselves to do more and innovate faster.
The internal teams supporting the project at BCBS, have also been glad to report that the credibility of the teams have been elevated due to the increased performance and flexibility of the site and overall workflows. There has been a significant decrease in ticket based fixes because team can be proactive rather than reactive, and move quickly and remain efficient in the process.
