The Client
With a medical staff of nearly 1,000 specialists, Phoenix Children’s Hospital is one of the largest pediatric healthcare systems in the country, and the most comprehensive children's care facility in Arizona. The hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, trauma and emergency care across more than 75 subspecialties.
The Situation
The former Phoenix Children’s Hospital website contained thousands of pages of content, but its complex navigation meant there was important information was buried deep in the site. The search functionality needed to be improved to better sort, filter and categorize results. Additionally, there were many microsites that had been developed by different hospital departments over time, and the hospital wanted to bring all of its microsites and practice sites back under one domain.
The Challenges
PCH wanted to elevate its brand and better represent its national reputation for excellence in a site audit in partnership with content agency Casual Astronaut helped prioritize more than 10,000 pages of content and identify candidates for removal. The site also needed to be able to surface relevant content for teens, parents, physicians, and people in a crisis or emergency situation. Palintir tested wireframes and performed chalkmark tests around the menu structure, both of which helped make sure the UX was simple and straightforward for all audiences. For general site search, Palintir implemented Solr-based Acquia Search, which provided more capabilities than the standard Drupal search functionality. Palantir added recommended results to promote primary content types based on relevant searches.
The Solution
All of the overall goals for PCH’s redesign tied back to optimizing the content and navigation. Palantir developed a strategy for the project and decided to build a content model for PCH using Drupal. By building out content types directly in Drupal, as opposed to organizing content in a spreadsheet, the client was able to go into the site and actually see how their content would be displayed.
The Results
PCH was able to optimize the content on their site and take the site from 10,000 pages down to 900 pages. Paired with their new increased search functionality, site users in need of finding critical healthcare information can now do so quicker and with greater ease. The development environment in Acquia Cloud enabled Palintir to deploy the content model quickly and demonstrate progress early in the project.
